I’m literally sobbing I just read about Patroclus’ nine dogs wow he’s such a softie, of course he does who else would go to war and adopt all the stray dogs
Oh wait Achilles just slit their throats okay then
this is why Hannibal compares himself and Will to Achilles and Patroclus isn’t it
#why was Will so desperate to create a family?#how does someone who said he never connected to the concept of family go from zero to practically adopting Abigail with a stranger?#i get that it’s the desperation of the deprived + (unconsciously) falling in love with Hannibal that’s done it#but even then I’m still puzzled#I mean it might as well have been an ABO fic if you think about it#Will practically falling into Hannibal’s lap desperate for a family#and ofc hannibal happily took advantage#idk.. i suspect Oeuf is a lot more important episode than we give credit#theme-wise that is#the concept of family is the wheel that started the whole drama enmeshing everyone in the process and ended up crushing them ( @foyernormanchapel )
I always saw Will’s want for a family as a result of his empathy. He knows what it’s like to have a mom/dad/children/etc. from empathizing with others and because we know that Will is a sponge and what he takes in often sticks, we know that the feelings he would get from empathizing with someone who has familial ties (or empathizing with an entire family, like in the Red Dragon arc), that Will knows what it feels like to have those close connections and that those connections for him would feel so real because they are.
But then he looks around his own life and he sees that he, Will Graham, doesn’t have any of those connections. He didn’t know his mom. His dad was essentially a stranger. There are no siblings or family members ever shown. Those connections he empathized with don’t exist for him and it makes the disparities of his life more blaring.
And Will has been like this his whole life. He spent his entire life not having those connections himself. He can look around and empathize and feel what it’s like to have a dad/be a dad, but it’s not him and he knows it isn’t.
All this feeds into his envy, his want for that connection for himself. He’s never connected to the concept because it’s never been him. It’s been the person he’s empathized with, but not himself. (I can imagine little Will looking at other kids’ families and easily slipping into their mind without even realizing it and then going back home where he… doesn’t have any of that understanding and acceptance and love).
I think that would create a sort of bitterness inside of him where he writes family off entirely while also really, really wanting one for himself. Not someone else’s. Not the kid’s down the street. His own family who will look at him and see him and love him.
when I was very very into Hannibal, I remember thinking that this desire was so dumb but I just wanted a fic where like….au time…..Hannibal really is just a psych trying his best to help Will. He can’t communicate like a normal person and says a lot of ominous shit, but he’s good at cooking the usual meats and probably oversteps his professional bounds but in like. a helpful friendly normal way. He’s never tasted human flesh and he’s happy to tell you that.
Will: I mean, I believe you, but you must understand that it’s uncomfortable that you keep specifically denying it.
Hannibal, cooking a wholesome meal with actual chicken and, he assured everyone, zero human: my name rhymes with cannibal, Will. I do not judge people for their concerns.
characters who crave affection but at the same time have no idea how to respond to actually receiving it due to the fact theyve rarely ever experienced it are my absolute favourite
Never forget Hannibal’s face when Will says, “Peter, is your social worker in that horse?”. Like, he’s seen and done some serious shit but that’s a new level of fucked up lol
And then when Peter answers with a soft “yes”. Will’s reaction = priceless
What he has is pure empathy. He can assume your point of view, or mine, and maybe some other points of view that scare him. It’s an uncomfortable gift. Perception’s a tool that’s pointed on both ends.
