Key Elements to Working with INTPs
INTPs value logic above all else, so maintain logical arguments.
Do not insult an INTP or dismiss their values: they will get extremely defensive.
INTPs act like mirrors to those they are around: they reciprocate emotions.
Plans and schedules do not suit an INTP: give them freedom of action.
Be honest with an INTP.
INTPs’ intellectual and sceptical approach often leads them to be the most questioning of all the types. They often feel driven to clarify and detest sloppy thinking or inconsistencies.
INTP and Procrastination
The INTP often procrastinates as a result of their high work standards. They prefer to spend their time researching and planning a project. Subsequently, their focus on these initial stages can result in neglecting deadlines or not starting a project. This can lead the INTP to become critical and result in further delays. The INTP also has a tendency to
become consumed in one project and may neglect beginning other necessary tasks. The INTP may also use cleaning or organizing their outside world as a mechanism to avoid internally organizing and clarifying the information they have gathered. The INTP may find it beneficial to set multiple deadlines throughout a project’s duration in order to keep them on task. They may also find it helpful to have someone assist them in staying within their timelines. As well, discussing their high standards for a project may help them determine whether their expectations are realistic and attainable.
Managing the INTP
TO FUNCTION BEST INTPs NEED:
Freedom to work independently. Opportunities to design, problems to solve. Intellectual variety and support for their ideas. Positive feedback, recognition, and a reason for what they are doing.
INTPs ARE FRUSTRATED BY:
Being told what to do and how to do things. Unintelligent demands. Routine and redundancy. Overly emotional responses.
INTPs IRRITATE OTHERS BY:
Appearing arrogant and not communicating. Hurting others’ feelings. Skepticism and hair-splitting. Refusing to deal with details and a lack of execution.
INTPs VALUE:
Concepts, intelligence, and ingenuity.
INTP and Best Fit Relationships
Flexible and adaptable
Want to make sense of concepts, and the world
Logical and analytical- want others to be logical
May have great powers of concentration
Like abstract and symbolic thinking
Often non-traditional
May be seen as aloof; out of touch with the world
Under stress: may feel overwhelmed and misunderstoodBest types for a relationship: ENTP, INTP, INTJ
Possible types for a relationship: ESTJ, ISTJ, ESTP, ENTJ, ENFJ, INFJ, ENFP, INFP
Least likely types for a relationship: ESFJ, ISFJ, ISTP, ESFP, ISFP
Percentage of the US population: 5-6%
One of the few bottlenecks that INTPs impose upon themselves is their restless fear of possible failure. No other personality type worries that much about missing a piece of the mental puzzle or overlooking some crucial fact that might lead to a better solution. Unlike their more confident INTJ or ENTJ cousins, INTPs could spend ages reflecting on their actions.
If I could focus my fairly considerable brain power on something productive consistently, I’d be a genius. But I can’t, so I’m not.
had to be done.
INFJ: I’m getting sick of running my blog. Six months is a long time.
INTP: You’ve been running the blog for six months?
INFJ: No. Those were two separate thoughts. Should have been period. Paragraph. Six months is a long time period. Paragraph. My god I’m talking like an E.E. Cummings poem. Question mark. Exclamation. Comma, comma, comma!
INTP: Chameleon.
